Climbing in Spain

If you are interested in rock climbing in Spain – you will find el Chorro as a great climbing area in the south of Spain, near a Ardales village (50 km from Malaga). It’s a place easy to reach & has 1000´s of routes and some boulders. All the area around “el Chorro” got places to climb, Campillos 30km from el Chorro has a lot to offer for climbers with different kind of experience.
To get to el Chorro you first go to Malaga, from there you take the train to el Chorro, it’s only one a day or so, leaving in the evening. When you get off at el Chorro station you turn right and start walking the road leading downhill… after just a few minutes you will see a yellow house with some red on it (first house)… that’s the Refugio, pretty good place to stay if you wanna make it cheap (6€ a night).

Other great areas for climbing in Spain are Siurana (Costers del Siurana), that is located not far from Barcelona; Rodellar and Cuenca. All of them hare loaded with plenty of superb routes and the distance between them is less than 500 km. The distance between El Chorro and Barcelona is about 1200 km. If you want to see smth great – go to Siurana and Rodellar, where you can choose between about 1000 mind-blowing climbs.

Fuentetoba is a climbing site 10 km west of Soria with more than 120 bolted routes. Soria’s local climbing club has a quite good rocodromo (indoor training hall) as well with approx. 300 m2 of bouldering on inclined walls and roofs.

By the way both El chorro, Siurana, Rodellar anc Cuenca have campings. The price is about 4-5 euros.

If you are interested in bouldering in Soria – it’s smth about 220 km north of Madrid. There are hundreds of blocks in the area.
Navalosa, a small village in Avila will give you ability to join the biggest Spanish bouldering competition.
El Escorial (about 41 km northwest of Madrid), near the Sierra de Guadarrama. In the city – Palace of “San Lorenzo” is worth visiting.

Other areas that can be recommended for bouldering in Spain are Morata de Jalon (between Soria and Zaragoza), Candelario (Sierra de Gredos), Rodellar and Riglos.
