Travelling Portugal

Portugal is fantastic looking county, especially the Algarve region in the south. The beaches are clean and the people are warm and friendly and just love the tourists. It is a very quaint old country with lots of architectural interest and fantastic for shopping. There are plenty of little streets filled with craft shops and the museum and castle are also very interesting.

First of all, you can visit Lisbon – the quite the trendy city and fairly euro fashion forward. Pants or jeans are most acceptable here, as in most of Europe, for men. You may stand out as an American if you wear shorts. If you choose to wear shorts, the standard “khaki” shorts are most appropriate and you can’t go wrong with a button front shirt or something like a “polo” shirt that has a collar.

Women will probably fit in best by wearing capris, skirts, or the boot-cut or flared low-ride pants/jeans with high heels sporting a very pointy toe while wearing sleeveless shirts or blouses. Lisbon is a big city so there are quite a few tourists. You may well see many natives in shorts and T-shirts depending upon where you go.

Lisbon has a mild weather, so rain is not very common. Night are cold in the autumn, while during the days temperatures are mild (usually about 60 Fahrenheit). Anyway, during the autumn you can find several rainy days.
The beaches to the south (Algarve) have warmer water and there is generally better weather in general; the coast of Alentejo is more desert and less touristic but the water is colder; Lisbon area is more urban although there are plenty of very beautiful beaches (such as the ones I go to); the north is colder.
