Carnival season in Canary Islands

Carnival season. End of January to the beginning of March Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Gran Canaria are caught up in a carnival whirl from the end of January until the middle of February. Then the baton is passed to Maspalomas, and the fairytale show continues until the beginning of March. What happens during these carnivals?

Everything a human being can imagine: musical performances, children’s’ musical contests, comedy acts, music competitions, choosing a queen from both young girls and women, parades, masquerades, a competition for the best masquerade costumes, concerts of comparsas and rondalias bands, a music and choreography festival, a celebration in honor of the Queen of the Carnival, festive cavalcades (a parade of magnificently-decorated autos), clown shows, a sardine funeral and “wars” in which fish and confetti are the weapons.

Finally in closing, there is a grandiose masquerade called “Caribbean Holiday.”
